The Bones Beneath the Field — Yusuf has been watching the German archaeologist Dr. Brandt's mules since they came over the ridge in Ottoman Anatolia in 1872 — an hour before they reached the village. Brandt has papers and permissions and a purpose that has nothing to do with the village and everything to do with what lies two feet beneath the field where Yusuf grows his wheat. The ground has waited two thousand years. The story is about what Yusuf must decide about who has the right to determine what it gives up.
