How Your Child Learns — And How to Teach Them

Every child sitting at your kitchen table is wired differently.

One of them lights up when you draw a diagram. Another needs to hear you explain it out loud before anything clicks. A third cannot absorb a single thing until they have touched it, built it, or moved their body through it. And a fourth reads the page once, quietly, and simply knows it.

None of them are wrong. None of them are broken. They are simply learning in the way their minds were built to learn.

I know this firsthand — not just as a teacher, but as a learner myself.

I am a visual learner through and through. When someone stands in front of me reading instructions aloud or talking me through a list of directions, something happens inside me that I can only describe as barely contained frustration. My mind screams at me to just grab whatever they are reading right out of their hands so I can see it myself. I do not do this, of course — social decorum and all that — but the impulse is real and it is loud. I need to see it. Hearing it is simply not the same.

I have carried that understanding into every classroom I have ever taught in. Because I know that many children feel exactly what I feel — that internal frustration when information comes in a form their mind cannot easily process. They are not being difficult. They are not failing to pay attention. They are simply not auditory learners in an auditory moment.

And then there was my son.

He learned to read sitting on a yoga ball, bouncing up and down, while I held the book on my lap. Do not ask me how he absorbed a single word in that condition — the motion alone would have made my head spin and my eyes cross. But he needed to move in order to learn. That movement was not a distraction. It was the key. Take away the yoga ball and the bouncing and the learning stopped. Give it back and he was right there with me.

That is a kinesthetic learner. And if I had insisted he sit still and focus the way I naturally preferred to work, I might have spent years wondering why he was struggling — never realizing that the struggle was never about his ability. It was about the mismatch between how I was teaching and how he was wired to learn.

One of the greatest gifts of homeschooling is the freedom to recognize how each of your children learns — and to teach them accordingly. But I want to be clear about something before we go further: recognizing your child's learning strength is not permission to only teach to that strength. Every child needs to develop across all areas.

The goal is to use their strengths as the front door — the way you initially introduce and reinforce new material — while consistently and gently building up the areas where they are weaker. You meet them where they are so you can take them further than they could go alone.

The Visual Learner

Visual learners think in pictures. They remember what they saw more than what they heard. They are often drawn to color, patterns, charts, and spatial organization. They may struggle to follow long verbal instructions but thrive when you show them something. If your child seems to zone out during your explanations but snaps to attention the moment you pick up a marker — you likely have a visual learner on your hands.

What they need: diagrams, maps, timelines, color-coded notes, and illustrated books. Color code math operations. Use graphic organizers for writing. Post vocabulary words on the wall. For memory work, write it out in different colors.

Where to stretch them: Practice giving multi-step verbal instructions and asking them to repeat back what they heard.

The Auditory Learner

Auditory learners process the world through sound. They remember what they heard. They often talk through problems out loud or need to say something aloud before they understand it. They frequently ask you to repeat things — not because they weren't paying attention, but because hearing it again is how they cement it.

What they need: Read-alouds, oral narration, discussion, and memory work set to songs or chants. Let them talk through a math problem out loud before writing the answer.

Where to stretch them: Build silent independent work skills gradually. Start with shorter periods and extend over time.

The Kinesthetic Learner

Kinesthetic learners learn by doing. They need to move, touch, build, and experience. My son is the perfect example — he learned to read chapter books in kindergarten bouncing on a yoga ball. The movement was not a problem to be corrected. It was the solution. Before you decide your child has a focus problem, ask yourself whether you have ever tried teaching them while they move.

What they need: Manipulatives for math, acting out historical events, building models, writing spelling words in sand or playdough, walking while reviewing memory work.

Where to stretch them: Build desk stamina gradually. Start with short focused work periods and increase over time.

The Reading and Writing Learner

Reading and writing learners process information best through text. They love books, lists, notes, and written explanations. They tend to be strong writers and may fill notebooks with their own thoughts and observations.

What they need: Written notes, written narration, learning journals, and written instructions. Let them research through books and articles.

Where to stretch them: Build in regular oral narration, hands-on projects, and opportunities to present what they know out loud.

A Word About Mixed Learners

Most children are not purely one type. Watch your children continuously. Notice which lessons click and which ones leave them blank. They are telling you how they learn. Your job is to listen.

The learning style is your starting point — the door through which new information enters most easily. Use it. But do not stop there. Your goal is to form a learner who can adapt — equipped for however learning comes.

That is a child who is ready for anything. And that is exactly what you are building.
