The Shepherd Who Counted Wrong — Yoel is forty-one years old and has been shepherding in the Judean hills since he was twelve — first for his father, then for himself. He counts them every evening without fail, and on the evening the count comes up short he counts again, and the second count matches the first. Ninety-nine. The story takes the question that Luke 15 does not ask — not whether to go, but what the going costs and what the shepherd finds when he gets there — and answers it with the full weight of a man who has to make the decision alone.
