The Interpreter's Silence — Georgios Sphrantzes has been speaking for other men since he was fifteen, and on the last day of Constantinople in 1453, he is fifty-one years old and finds he has nothing left to say for himself. Interpreters who work both sides of a long negotiation develop, over years, a fluency in other men's voices that comes at a cost. The story is about what that cost looks like at the end.
