📦 Shipping Notice for Print Books
To keep shipping costs as low as possible, we recommend placing smaller print book orders whenever practical. Orders that exceed our print partner's U.S. shipping weight limit may be fulfilled from a U.K. facility, resulting in significantly higher shipping charges. If you're purchasing several print books, placing two or more smaller orders will often reduce your shipping costs.
The Pilot Fish — Kenji Watanabe has been interpreting for the Dutch merchants at Dejima in Nagasaki for many years, and of the thousands of sentences he has translated, perhaps a dozen have given him pause. A document arrives in 1700 in which two manifests do not agree on a specific entry — not in the way that copying errors produce disagreement, but in the way that decisions produce it. He translated it accurately, as he translated everything, which was not a neutral act and never had been.
