📦 Shipping Notice for Print Books

To keep shipping costs as low as possible, we recommend placing smaller print book orders whenever practical. Orders that exceed our print partner's U.S. shipping weight limit may be fulfilled from a U.K. facility, resulting in significantly higher shipping charges. If you're purchasing several print books, placing two or more smaller orders will often reduce your shipping costs.

The Portrait Painter's Problem — Adriaan van Houten has been painting portraits of Amsterdam's merchant families for nineteen years and has learned many things — how to flatter a man's confidence, how to make children sit still. In 1668 he has painted five families and five dogs, and somewhere in the delivery of the portraits he has put the wrong dogs in the wrong pictures. All five families have received a portrait. None of them has received their dog.
