The Book of Centuries is one of the oldest tools in classical education, and one of the most powerful. Charlotte Mason used it with her students. It works because it does what timelines on posters cannot: it puts the student’s own hand into history.
The Cornerstone Academics Book of Centuries covers 6000 BC to 2026 AD — eighty centuries, each with its own two-page spread. The left page holds sixteen date and event rows, structured for recording what happened and when: empires that rose and fell, discoveries, battles, key figures, turning points. The right page is structured for illustration: two drawing boxes for portraits, maps, artifacts, or scenes, a notes section with six writing lines, and a Key People strip at the bottom.
Students add entries as they encounter them in their history studies. They don’t fill every century at once. The notebook grows with the curriculum year by year, becoming a complete personal record of everything they have learned about history in their own words and their own hand.
A completed Book of Centuries is both a study tool and a keepsake. It is the kind of artifact a classical education produces — something a student made, that shows what they know, and that they will keep.
