Mr. Oliphant Writes a Letter — Ewan Oliphant, parish schoolmaster of Kirkhaugh, Northumberland 1847, has spent twenty-three of his forty-six years teaching the children of shepherds and lead-miners the proper use of words. His chief pleasure is the proper use of words. His chief sorrow is that so few of the people around him share this pleasure. He is writing a letter. He has been revising it for three weeks. The question he has not yet answered is whether he wants the person he is writing to to like him for the letter, or for the man who wrote it.
