Penitence Without Performance — The staves are in the wrong order. Margaret sees it the moment she walks into the shop — her father's staves for the commission barrel, sorted by width and laid out on the bench in the sequence he left them, except they are not in that sequence now. She knocked them with her elbow two nights ago, reaching past them for the lamp, and put them back wrong in the dark. Her father will be home from the mill by evening.
