The Ferryman — Gerhardt Kessler has been reading the Rhine for thirty-one years — reading passengers the way he reads weather and current, before he decides whether to push off. The monk who appears on the eastern bank in 1348 is not the usual hour for crossings and not the usual kind of traveler, and Gerhardt puts his pole in the water and pushes off anyway.
