The Goat on the Roof — Three days before Eleni Karas's wedding in Thessaloniki in 1830, a goat belonging to her father's oldest enemy appears on the roof of the house. The goat has been there since Tuesday. No one can agree on how it got there, and it shows no interest in coming down. The complication that makes both problems considerably worse is that six years of walking past a neighbor without speaking turns out to weigh more than it seemed at the time — and the weight is only visible now that a goat on a roof has made it impossible to continue.
