The Horse He Borrowed — The horse had belonged to Gunnar Sigurdsson for as long as Leif could remember, and Leif had borrowed him for a journey and promised to return him in good condition. The horse came back lame — not badly, not permanently, but lame. Leif does not think of himself as brave. He thinks of himself as someone who said he would do a thing, and who now must account for what happened to what was lent to him.
