The Jacobite’s Pass — Alasdair Begg is seventeen and going up the hill on a November morning in the Scottish Highlands in 1715 to check the upper grazing before winter brings the cattle down. He finds a man in the bracken — a Gaelic officer named MacRae, shot through the left shoulder, been there a day and a half before Alasdair came up the hill. What Alasdair does with a man who is both a wounded person and a political problem is what the story is about.
