The Mark on the Hide — Thomas found the discoloration on the third day — a bracket of brown where the fat hadn't been fully scraped before the cure, tucked near the edge, easy to miss. His father hasn't seen it. The hide is due to the guild master. Thomas saw it and didn't see it, the way a person can notice something and immediately begin deciding not to have noticed it.
