The Traveling Clock — Henry Lello has spent two years in Constantinople trying to seem more important than he was, and then the clock he sent as a gift to the Sultan went backward. In 1599, a mechanical clock going backward in the Sultan's court is not a small matter — it is the English ambassador's entire case for the sophistication of English craft, and it has gone backward in front of three attendants and the palace physician. The story is about what a man does when the thing that was supposed to establish his credibility makes him the opposite.
