What the Road Requires — Ibrahim has been loading salt onto camels since he was seventeen and is nineteen now on his fourth crossing of the Sahara. He can load in the dark by feel, knows the particular tension of the rope that means the load will hold. When he encounters a man on the road who needs something Ibrahim has and cannot afford to give, the road asks a question that his four crossings have not prepared him to answer.
